We love leeks all summer but autumn is when we fall hard for their deeply savory, aromatic sweetness. Tadorna Leek thrives all season and is more cold-hardy than most, so she is our go-to for fall leeks, especially. At Fruition, we sow our first leeks indoors in March, sowing more each month through early August to surround ourselves with delectable abundance all season. Transplanting as well as mulching deeply with straw, leaves or grass clippings increases the white, sweet stem that we love so well.

Planting Method: Transplant Only

When to sow: Indoors, late winter, ~late March

Seed Depth: 1/4 inch Days to Germination: 5 at 75°F (24°C); 12 at 60°F(15°C)

Sowing and seedling care: Sow in open flats, roughly 1/4 inch apart. Water evenly and clip tops once 5 inches tall (enjoy like chives). After transplanting, mulch reduces weed & watering pressure.

When to transplant: Mid-spring

Transplant Spacing: 3 inches Sun Needs: Full

Days to Harvest: 100

Harvest: Lift with fork to harvest at desired size. Hill to blanch. Winter storage: leave in ground or harvest, clean & store just above freezing with high humidity.
