More like a feather of kale than a leaf of kale, Bear Necessities Kale is hyper-frilled, cold hardy and exceptionally tender. We love Bear Necessities as both baby and full-size leaves in all seasons, even raw in salads: broader leaves have larger fibers, so the intricate lace of Bear Necessities are notably more tender and sweet compared to all other kale we’ve tasted. We sincerely hope you never have the devastating Swede Midge munching your brassicas, but if you do, you’ll be delighted to learn that they as well as Flea Beetles care for Bear Necessities far less than most other kale varieties, as well.

Organic Bear Necessities Kale

Planting Method: Direct Sow or Transplant

To Direct Sow: Early spring, after snowmelt, sow 3-4 seeds every foot, in rows 18 inches apart for full-size plants and thin to 1. For baby leaves, sow 40 seeds per foot in a 2 inch wide band every 3 weeks for continual harvest.

For Transplanting: Indoors, sow 2 seeds per cell or soil block, and thin to 1. Harden off and transplant around last frost, 12 inches apart. Mulch to reduce weed and watering pressure.

Seed Depth: 1/8 inch    Days to Germination: 2 at 70°F; 10 at 55°F

Sun Needs: Full/Part

Spacing (after thinning/transplanting): 12 inches; rows 18 inches apart

Days to Harvest: 8 days to microgreen; 25 baby leaf; 50 full size
