Though eggplant evolved in much warmer climates than ours, we’ve regionally adapted organic eggplant seeds for nearly one decade to thrive in our short seasons. From classic heirloom Italian bells to long, slender Asian eggplant, eggplant are often challenging to start from seed. At Fruition, we sow eggplant in soil blocks 2 months before final frost, early April for us here in Zone 5, germinating them on heat mats with ease. Good light is essential: Younger, less stressed seedlings are healthier and more abundant than older, more stressed seedlings. Harden off & transplant after final frost, once night temperatures are in the 50s. Eggplants are heavy feeders, so nourish them nutrient-dense fertility as well as fish emulsion for an abundant harvest.
