Planting: A hardy perennial in Zone 3, Marshmallow is best sown as soon as it is ripe in late summer and can be difficult to germinate consistently. For best results, ‘cold stratify’ seeds for 4-6 weeks in a moist paper towel in a closed plastic bag in the fridge before you sown indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. While Marshmallow will thrive in most soils it prefers cool, moist soil in partial or full shade where it will readily self-sow in Zone 4 or warmer.
Seed Saving: Saving Marshmallow seed is easy: simply wait for each flower to form a dry ring of seed that readily separates in your hands and toss immediately in the place you want it to grow in the future for the best results.
