Organic Gouda Winter Squash

After years of admiring Long Island Cheese pumpkin we instantly fell for Gouda, the inspiration of Michael Mazourek from Cornell University. It’s smaller and sweeter than Long Island Cheese with more refined, subtle ridges and thick, creamy flesh a dream for pies as well as soup. Cured well, Gouda will accompany you through the winter. And our botanical geek celebrates that Gouda is Cucurbita moschata rather than Cucurbita pepo, meaning voracious Cucumber Beetles are less attracted to its thinner, less succulent vines compared to classic pumpkins. Which makes Gouda much less susceptible to disease. And that much more delicious.

I had lush foliage but ended up with only one small squash.

1 of 5 Gouda improved Long Island Cheese October 18, 2019

I bought these seeds at the Philly Flower Show directly from Fruition. Sowed them June 1st and they never germinated. Sowed another crop about the middle of June and they did not produce many fruit (4 total on 3 vines). They did not grow much bigger than big Tomatoes. They did not ripen before the frost in October and are unusable.  I planted them where I normally plant Pumpkins and I watered and fertilized them. The seed packet only had ten seeds.

The size is perfect for roasting! The flavor reminded me of a buttercup but had the consistency of  a sweet potato! Very ,very good!  I only planted a couple seeds and wished I had planted more!
