Transcript: We have nesting shallots. Okay, you’re right, shallots do not lay eggs, but they do reproduce and take a look. They’re going for it and shallots are very similar to garlic which the garlic scapes are emerging, and we are eating them. We don’t, however, pluck the flowers of our shallots, and here is why. So a lot of various and sundry reasons. First and foremost, they’re just not that delicious compared to the tender garlic scape. These are actually quite fibrous and woody. They’re also much more pungent, but that is the least of our reasons because these are about to blossom and actually be amazing food for pollinators. Also, there’s many often per plant where there’s just one scape per garlic so it’s much easier to manage garlic scapes comparatively. Also, we found that isn’t an appreciable difference if we remove all of these beautiful seed heads, if we don’t, we’re going to still harvest tons of shallots. And while there is very little empirical evidence in garlic, it seems to make a big difference. And also, just in terms of curing garlic, if you have this great big scape coming up, it’s very cumbersome. And we find that when we let the shallots flower, it doesn’t make any difference in the curing process as well. So yes, there are so many reasons that we don’t in fact, leave take off any of the flowering seed heads up are shallots, only on our scapes.

And let me back up. It’s true. There are so many different kinds of shallots. These specifically and these , you are dwarf red shallots, Dutch Red shallots rather, and so they’re vegetative. They’re clonal. So seeded shallots. Yes, they only go to see their second year as a biennial. So if they’re going to see them your first year If you’re concerned, however, by contrast these beautiful Dutch red shallots, oh, hello Pancho, these beautiful Dutch red shallots, they are gorgeously vegetative and their flowers won’t take any energy, surprisingly away from them producing 25, 30 even more if they’re really happy shallots in a crown, and I wish you could see, well, you’ll see in a few weeks, really the second third week in July, you’ll see I’ll lift these beautiful crowns of shallots up and they’re literally like a Saint Lucia crown of shallots. They’re incredible.

So I hope that you grow shallots, if you aren’t already. They are so much fun to grow. And if you grow garlic, it’s they’re just as easy and in some ways, they’re easier because you don’t harvest any scapes. You just end the pollinators love them all the more because take a look at all of these amazing blossoms, about to burst there. This is about to become a pollinator haven.
