A quintessential jack o’lantern! Charismatic and large, Howden Select is earlier than other Howden strains, selected by the brilliant Dan and Theresa Podoll of Prairie Road Organic Seeds. Brilliant orange with strong handles, Howden is often 20 to 30 pounds with ambitious 10+ foot vines growing 4 to 6 glorious pumpkins per plant.
What’s in a name? John Howden selected and shared this glorious seed in 1973 in Massachusetts, joining the untold generations of humxns and pumpkins who have been co-adapting together for millennia in our bioregion.

Organic Howden Select Pumpkin
Planting Method: Direct Sow Recommended
Direct Sow: After frost, late May to early June, sow 2 seeds every 3-4’ in rich soil, thinning to one.
To transplant: Start seedlings 3 weeks before final frost in peat pots or soil blocks for minimal root disturbance. Transplant after last frost with 3-4’ between plants.

Days to Germination: 5 days at 80°F
Spacing after thinning: 3-4 feet
Plant care: Use floating row cover to protect young seedlings from pests – just be sure to remove it at the time plants start flowering.
Days to Harvest: 100-115
Height: Full vine
Harvest: Harvest before frost & cure in warm place with good airflow for storage.
