Organic Gran’mommie’s Smile Dahlia

We adore these swirling petals of raspberry & lemon cream, early & prolific, each the size of a large golf ball. We harvest dozens & dozens of blossoms from each plant with sturdy stems splendid for cutting.

And Friends, the plants and people we love so often become entwined in our lives, bringing us back to our deepest roots and joy in all seasons. When we first met our dear friend Charles, the dahlias were in full and glorious bloom on our farm, which is enough to make any human swoon. But Charles’ rapture was unique, both reverent & jovial, not simply borne of the moment. Then we learned about Inez, Charles’ Gran’mommie in Tennessee who loved flowers, pink and purple especially. Then we learned about how dahlias came into their lives and how these blooms came to embody the beauty and dignity, the care and courage, the resilience and love. We asked Charles what he would love for this dahlia to be known as & we will never forget the love in his voice when he said, “Gran’mommie’s Smile.”

And Friends, a bit of botany: Dahlia tubers grow blooms identical to their parents, while seeds display a brilliant diversity of leaves & foliage, utterly unique from their parent tubers. Gran’mommie’s Smile is such a seed from our gardens many years ago that we admired with Charles, among the others. We harvested tubers that fall & every year since we’ve re-planted them with such joy, hoping one day to have enough tubers to share with the world. And finally, this day has come!
